About this Item

Description:

Limited edition of 1500 copies, of which this is #953. Printed by Anthoensen Press, designed by Ben Shiff. Images by Alice Neel, who died during the production of the book. With a narrative tribute to Alice Neel by Raphael Soyer, and signed by both Neel and Soyer -- apparently this is one of only 400 or 500 that were actually signed by both, as the publisher brought some pages unbound to Neel to have her sign them before she died. Neel is considered one of the great American painters of the 20th century. Hardcover, 12x16 inches (folio), with hand-marbled paper on the boards and quarter leather with gilt titles on the spine. The production quality of the book is top notch, with special paper made by Cartiere Enrico Magnani. The book is contained in an attractive black folding box, with gilt letters on a red leather label on the front, red velvet interior to box. With two color illustrations, two black and white illustrations within the text and full page skull-like etching that's a self-portrait of Neel. Book is in near fine condition, slipcase is good-plus with some fading around the edges of the front and wear to bottom right corner, light rubbing. Seller Inventory # 001808
