Tan buckram with black lettering and cover illustration of a bulldog. Light bump to head and heel of spine. Lengthy (and interesting) previous owner inscription to the front pastedown in pencil, which has been mostly erased. Flat signed by the author on the front endpaper. Small tear to lower edge of half title. Text is clean and bright, no marks. Wonderfully illustrated throughout by Victor Dowling. Only the inside flaps of the dust jacket remain, tucked neatly inside the book. "These true stories range through the centuries and all around the world as they tell of that heroic St. Bernard, Barry, and faithful Greyfriar's Bobby; of the dogs of famous writers like Lord Byron, Sir Walter Scott, Charles Dickens,Elizabeth Barrett, and william Lyon Phelps; of Balto, the heroic husky; Igloo, of Admiral Bryd's Antarctic Expedition; Sergeant-Major Joggs, famous mascot of the U.S. Marine Corps; and the war refugee poodle of Helen Hayes, outstanding American actress; about solider dogs of history and today's Dogs for Defense." (from the jacket). Seller Inventory # D121817
