Framed broadside under mat board, exposed area 8.5 inches by 14 inches. With a recessed space, beneath the proclamation, featuring a 1-inch pinback button that reads I Am Salman Rushdie. The faded signature of Rushdie runs diagonally over the names of the printed names of some-200 signatories. Black wood frame is slightly bumped at upper left, else Fine. For many in the U.S., the word fatwa was introduced when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini offered a multi-million dollar bounty on the life of Salman Rushdie after declaring his novel The Satanic Verses blasphemous to Mohammed and Allah. In Seattle, where Rushdie had been scheduled to speak, local literati collected signatures for a Seattle Times newspaper ad defending the author's free-speech rights. This is an offprint of that ad, signed by Rushdie in ink, now faded. Signatories include Seattle novelists, journalists, a Who's Who of the Pacific Northwest's publishing demimonde, and civic leaders, including Seattle Public Library Chief Librarian Liz Stroup. When cowering local bookstores removed The Satanic Verses from their shelves, Stroup courageously offered to buy their spare copies and advised terrorists ''to ask for Liz.'' .
