About this Item
DOUGLASS, Fredrick. "An Appeal to Congress for Impartial Suffrage" in The Atlantic Monthly. January 1867. Boston, Ticknor and Fields. Volume XIX. 764 pages. 9.5" x 6.5" inches bound in cloth boards. Includes the first appearance in print of two notable works, both published anonymously: Frederick Douglass's An Appeal to Congress for Impartial Suffrage, a plea for equal suffrage between the races in the aftermath of the Civil War, and Ralph Waldo Emerson's Terminus,a meditative poem on aging. Douglass's essay spans 5 pages and in it, he contends that full suffrage should be a right of a human in a purported democracy, as "man is the only government-making animal in the world." This egalitarian notion is echoed in his longstanding support for women's suffrage, and as one of the few men and only black person at the landmark Seneca Falls convention of 1848, Douglass said in regards to the right of women to vote "it was hers before she comprehended it. It is inscribed upon all the powers and facilities of her soul, and no custom, law or usage can ever destroy it." This edition of the Atlantic Monthly also contains Terminus, an elegant work by Emerson, where he invokes the Roman god of endings and boundaries, Terminus, to grapple with his advancing age and the impermanence of life. This edition of the Atlantic Monthly is in good condition, with moderate foxing throughout. Hinges cracked but holding. Some edgewear and wormholing to covers. The table of contents page is partially separated from spine. Previous owner inscribed her name on front free endpaper. Seller Inventory # 20656
