Condition: Sehr gut. IX, 164 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly rubbed and discolored jacket, otherwise very good and clean. / Leicht beriebener und verfärbter Umschlag, sonst sehr gut und sauber. - In this study of the medieval drama in its pre-Carolingian background, the author offers a new account of the historical conditions under which a religious theatrical tradition operated in early medieval Gaul and Spain. Avoiding the notion of Mass as drama, she finds the background of medieval theater in the pagan traditions of ancient mimic and pantomimic performance, as known and adapted in the Gallic liturgies of the sixth and seventh centuries. The late Roman drama consisting of mime and pantomime supplanted the literary plays of Plautus, Terence, and Seneca. Mimic theater flourished in Rome and Byzantium and consisted of a mimic representation and dance accompanied by a lector's voice reciting the plot. In this pattern Dunn finds the prototype of the Gallic saint's lection, which emerged as literacy steadily declined following the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century. The oral reading of the saint's life, often as part of the Mass for the saint's festival, became a community ritual and may be seen as the matrix of sacred medieval drama in western Europe. - E. Catherine Dunn is professor emerita of English at The Catholic University of America, where she received both her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Her interest in early drama began when she wrote her doctoral dissertation on Shakespeare's King Lear and increased as she shifted her attention to the medieval period. In addition to publishing numerous articles in scholarly journals, she is coeditor of The Medieval Drama and Its Claudelian Revival (CUA Press).
