About this Item
An early revised edition of this extended prose work from Irish author Oliver St. J. Gogarty, signed by the author. Revised edition, published the same year as the first edition. Signed and inscribed by the author to the title page to William Alfred Westropp Foyle, a British bookseller and businessman who co-founded Foyles bookshop in 1903. As one of the leading London booksellers of the twentieth century, when the brothers opened their first bookshop the business grew so rapidly that by the 1920s they held a stock of four million volumes. With a portrait frontispiece. The author's first extended prose work, described as "something new in form: neither a 'memoir' nor a novel". It features many of Gogarty's Dublin acquaintances and well-known contemporaries as characters. Shortly after its publication, it became the subject of a highly publicised libel lawsuit. Written by Oliver Joseph St. John Gogarty, an Irish poet, author, otolaryngologist, athlete, politician, and conversationalist. He served as the inspiration for Buck Mulligan in James Joyce's novel Ulysses. From the library of Christopher Foyle, a British philanthropist and the chairman of the famous Foyle's Bookshop in London. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light wear to the extremities. Fading to the spine and board edges with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd small spot. Light age toning to the endpapers. Very Good Indeed. Seller Inventory # 911T46
