A program signed Graham Greene for the play The Potting Shed. This play, debuting in 1957, was written by Graham Greene as a psychological drama centered around a secret held by the Callifer family for nearly thirty years. The patriarch of the family is dying, and James, his 40-year-old son, appears unexpectedly. Wanting to understand why he feels incapable of love or joy, James sets out to uncover what happened during a moment in his familys potting shed that happened decades ago. He cannot remember what occurred, and family members who recall the event are unwilling to describe it to him. Through his estranged, alcoholic, priest uncle he discovers the truth. As a teenager, distraught by his fathers rigid and oppressive atheism, James committed suicide by hanging himself in the potting shed. His uncle, William, found him and prayed for a miracle, offering God his most precious possession, his own faith, in exchange for Jamess life. The miracle occurred and James was resurrected, but the cost was that his uncle became a hollow man, continuing his priestly duties for years without actually believing in God. This play was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play, and two actors won awards for their performances: Frank Conroy won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play and Carol Lynley won a Theatre World Award.
