CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: This is the history of the original Pennsylvania Bucktail regiment, the 42nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (13th Reserve). Written by William H. Rauch, formerly in Company F, he also served as the Historian of the Regimental Association. Mr. O.R. Howard Thomson assisted Mr. Rauch with this history. The book traces the history of the Pennsylvania Bucktails through organization to mustering out. Rauch and Thomson use a variety of sources, including soldiers' letters, diaries, and personal eyewitness accounts, as well as official reports. The Pennsylvania "Bucktails" were a specially trained and equipped fighting unit of the Army of the Potomac. Recruited from big-boned, country-raised marksmen, they used unusual fighting tactics and were equipped with Sharps repeating rifles, and later with Spencer carbines. They also wore the distinctive 'bucktail' as a symbol of their marksmanship. During their three years of service, they participated in almost all of the major campaigns, battles, and engagements of the Army of the Potomac -- the Seven Days Battles, the Valley Campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse, to name a few. At Gettysburg they helped defend Little Round. A vivid regimental history. The "Bucktails" Regiment is recognized as a FOX 300 Fighting Regiment.
