About this Item
17 pages of Heidegger s handwritten notes in black, red, and yellow ink; 7 pages of Gadamer s typed lecture text annotated by Heidegger in the same colors. Housed in a folder titled in Heidegger s handwriting. Dated July 1965. An extensive file of Heidegger s notes on Gadamer s 1965 lecture Von Hegel bis Heidegger. This file contains an extensive set of notes by Martin Heidegger (1889 1976) on Hans-Georg Gadamer s 1965 lecture course Von Hegel bis Heidegger at Heidelberg University. As Gadamer later recalled: "In the summer semester of 1965 I offered a lecture course titled Von Hegel bis Heidegger. Heidegger attended its final session and offered some remarks after my lecture. Basically, in those remarks Heidegger continued to emphasize the fact that Hegel s thought culminates in a form of absolute knowledge." (Hahn, 1997). The present papers appear closely tied to Gadamer s recollection. They may represent Heidegger s preparatory notes for his remarks during the lecture or a draft for a more detailed response developed later. The file consists of two parts: A 7-page typed transcript of Gadamer s lecture, annotated by Heidegger on July 21, 1965. Some later annotations reference the expanded publication of Gadamer s ideas (Anmerkungen zu dem Thema Hegel und Heidegger , in Natur und Geschichte: Karl Löwith zum 70. Geburtstag, eds. Braun & Riedel, Stuttgart: Kohlhammer, 1967). And seventeen sheets of Heidegger s handwritten notes on Hegel, corresponding to Gadamer s description of Heidegger s remarks during the lecture. Martin Heidegger was one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century, known for his contributions to phenomenology, hermeneutics, and existentialism. Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900 2002), deeply influenced by Heidegger s philosophy, was a prominent figure in hermeneutics and a key member of Heidegger s Marburg circle during the 1920s.
