Novel for adults set in southern California right before the Gold Rush, by an author better known for his YA books such as "The Island of the Blue Dolphins.'' In 413 pages with decorative endpapers, it was SIGNED by the AUTHOR to the limitation page (his signature only), with a photo of a mission & the designation "California Edition." Endpapers show a map of southern California, redrawn by Paul Laune from W. H. Emory, Lieut. Top. Eng'rs. 1846-47, while the ffep depicts the floor plan of the Hill of the Hawk. A FIRST EDITION, First Printing from 1947, this hardcover 8vo has blue cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering & stamped design to front & spine. Condition is VG+: very clean, binding strong & straight, pages slightly off-white but unmarked, slight corner bumping & rubbing to extremities, with small white stain to lower edge of front board.
