HUGHES COURT (1930-1941). The Hughes Court was the period in the Supreme Court when Charles Evans Hughes served as Chief Justice, known for moving the Supreme Court from the U.S. Capitol to the newly built Supreme Court Building. This court presided during the Great Depression and four conservative justices struck down many of the New Deal policies President Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed. A group of justices are known as the "Four Horsemen, Pierce Butler, James Clark McReynolds, George Sutherland, and Willis Van Devanter, causing tension between the President and the court. In addition to the four judges named, this court included Edward Terry Sanford, Owen Roberts, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., Louis Brandeis, Harlan F. Stone, Benjamin N. Cardozo, Stanley Forman Reed, Felix Frankfurter, William O. Douglas, Hugo Black, and Frank Murphy.Cards Signed. 3 cards. c. 1932-1937. Three cards framed and signed Harlan F Stone, Owen Roberts, Benjamin N. Cardozo, Charles E. Hughes, Willis Van Devanter, J.C. McReynolds, Pierce Butler, Geo. Sutherland, and Louis W. Brandeis. Each of the cards has three signatures. On top of these cards is a photograph that includes reproductions of these signatures. Some cases this court presided over include A.L.A. Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United States where the court struck down the National Industrial Recovery Act, United States v. Butler, striking down the Agricultural Adjustment Act, West Coast Hotel Co. v. Parrish upholding minimum wage legislation passed by Washington state, and NLRB v. Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. upholding the constitutionality of the National Labor Relations Act of 1935. These cards are professionally framed and in very fine condition.
