Very Good Plus in publisher's original dark blue cloth with gilt titles and the National Geographic Society emblem stamped in gilt on front cover and spine. Boards show only mild rubbing to corners and faint toning to spine; binding tight and square. Endpapers clean, with only light age toning.

Signed by George Shiras, 3rd in black ink on the front flyleaf, without inscription. A handsome, well-preserved copy of this landmark photographic work.

George Shiras (1859-1942) was a pioneering wildlife photographer and conservationist whose innovative use of flashlight photography and automatic cameras transformed natural history documentation. His nocturnal wildlife images, many first published in National Geographic, brought the wonders of America's wilderness to the public eye and influenced generations of nature photographers. This richly illustrated volume contains hundreds of black-and-white photographs accompanied by Shiras's detailed narratives on wildlife behavior and his groundbreaking photographic methods. Includes chapters on Michigan deer, the Lake Superior region, northern birds, and Grand Island as an experimental game preserve. With a foreword by Edward W. Nelson.
