Add to basketG/No Dustjacket. 1857. Thompkins County. Stock Certificate. ITHACA AND NEWFIELD PLANK ROAD COMPANY. Issued to Joseph Esty who purchased Four Shares at $25. each on June 24th. 1857. Signed by Moses Hern, Sec. and H. D. Blakeslee, Pres. 5 1/2" x 8" on one side only. ÂÂ "A plank toll road had been built in 1852 from Newfield to Ithaca, making the trip somewhat less difficult, but it was still essentially an all-day affair to make the round trip by horse and wagon or carriage. Consequently, most people, both in the village and from the surrounding countryside, satisfied their needs in the village. By the late 1860s, downtown Newfield offered dry goods, grocery and perhaps a dozen other stores and services in its business district." by Charley Githler published in Ithacadotcom .
