Louis Calhern (1895-1956), born Carl Henry Vogt, February 19, 1895, Brooklyn, New York; died May 12, 1956, Tokyo, Japan while filming "Teahouse of the August Moon" of a heart attack; Tall, hawk-nosed actor with cultured voice and dignified bearing. A seasoned stage actor, he played some leads in silent films of the 1920s including Lois Weber's "The Blot"; by the 1930s he was in demand as a character actor in Hollywood; Calhern is well remembered today as conniving Ambassador Trentino in the 1933 Marx Brothers film "Duck Soup" and confirmed his sense of humor in Wheeler and Woolsey's "Diplomaniacs" 1933; he reached his peak in the 1950, playing a master criminal in "The Asphalt Jungle" 1950 directed by John Huston and with Marilyn Monroe's first major role.
