"The author entered the South via the Mississippi River, going southward from St. Louis and passing Memphis, Natchez, and New Orleans. He went to Mobile, Montgomery, Macon, Charleston, Wilmington (N.C.), Petersburg, and Richmond. New Orleans and Charleston were the only towns that made an impression on him. Interesting items pertaining to commerce, travel conditions, natural scenery, and morals and manners were included.
