About this Item
2005. First limited edition of 26 copies and lettered A to Z of which this is copy V. Inscribed and signed by the author with an additional handwritten poem. Stuart Montgomery, born 1938 in Rhodesia, was an eminent psychiatrist and expert in depression. In the 1960s he founded Fulcrum Press (1965-1974). Fulcrum published major American and British poets in the modernist and the avant-garde traditions in carefully designed books on good paper. The Fulcrum Press made a significant contribution to the British Poetry Revival and was one of the best known little presses of the period. The three long poems in this book are all part of the same cycle. Begun in the '60s, a piece of Circe appeared in Poetry Chicago and the full poem was published by Fulcrum Press in 1969. An early unfinished version of Calypso was included in a Christmas supplement of the Poetry Book Society in 1976 and is now complete and published here for the first time. Sirens was recently completed and makes its first appearance in this collection. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean. It has been hand-lettered and signed by Stuart Montgomery, with the following short verse on the last page: "For Patrick- No words now only the candle burning in the window". John Montague. 'Patrick' is Patrick Caulfield who drew the image of a burning candle for the front of the dust jacket. The unclipped dustwrapper is also in excellent condition. Seller Inventory # gPoetMontgom01
