About this Item
8vo. quarter vellum over paper-covered boards, paper cover label, top edge gilt, other uncut. 40 pages. Designed by Bruce Rogers (not in Haas or Warde). Minor damage to the head of the spine along the front hinge. Minor soiling to boards. A near fine copy. A very scarce book. (Another copy, similarly compiled by May, was sold at auction by Swann Galleries in October 2021. This was a presentation copy by May's wife to the widow of one of the other members.) Founded by Harvard Alumni of the class of 1857 as The Club that Jack Built. As this was rather cumbersome The Jacobite Club became the accepted title within a short time. Originally there were 26 members but by December 1908 there were only 7 remaining, and it is probable that this was their last publication. No publisher is stated but WorldCat states Bruce Rogers (presumably during his early 'Riverside Press' years). Consists of 17 page history of the Club by Joseph May (as J.M.), the lyrics of several songs and a list of the 26 past and present members. May appears to have compiled at least 2 (probably more) copies with additional material bound in. This includes a 4 page manuscript poem by May dated November 1908 that he read at the Club's Boston dinner, a typed note about the contents of the book, a copy of a printed 4 page The Jacobite Monthly for February 1906, and the lyrics of a song that was sung at their dinner in 1864 for one of the members home from the Civil War. Pencil annotations (presumably by May) found on the Members' page at rear. The typography is by the notable American book designer Bruce Rogers (1870-1957), who "was appreciated in his lifetime. In addition to several honorary degrees, in 1948 he was awarded a gold medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for distinction in the graphic arts. Over decades of accomplishment in which he designed approximately 500 books. Rogers literally defined the profession of book designing in the United States" (ANB). Francis Meynell stated that Rogers was."the greatest artificer of the book who ever lived" quarter vellum over paper-covered boards, paper cover label, top edge gilt, other uncut.
