JAMES T. FARRELL (1904-1979). Farrell was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer, best known for his trilogy Studs Lonigan, which was made into a film and television series. This trilogy, as well as his Danny ONeill series, portrays urban struggle in the early 20th century, especially among the Irish American working-class.TLS. 1 pg. December 26, 1936. New York, New York. A typed letter signed James T Farrell to the publisher Alfred Knopf: Dear Mr. Knopf; Please permit me to thank you for having sent me the Borzoi reader. The book impresses me as being one that is most interesting and useful. I know that it has called my attention to things which you have published that I hadn't read, and that I am likely to have neglected, and I am grateful for that. I think that it is a novel and valuable anthology, and I wish you success with it. Sincerely yours James T. Farrell. Farrell is writing to Knopf to thank him for the book he sent, The Borzoi Reader, a 1000-page anthology that is a collection of works published by Knopf. At this time, Farrell had just completed his most famous series, the Studs Lonigan trilogy, which was published by Vanguard Press. Knopf may have sent him this book to try and convince him to switch publishers, and this letter shows a professional and courteous reply. This letter is in good condition with chipping and is signed in pencil.
