Juneau Portrait II

Mark Kelley's personal vision of Juneau, Alaska--the state capital located at the water's edge of the forested mountains of the Inside Passage. More than 100 color photos record Juneau's small town life as well as the vistas and wildlife of the surrounding ocean, mountains, forests, glaciers and icefields. Writer Annabel Lund describes the contradictions of a small city surrounded by wilderness. She traces Juneau's history from a world-class gold mining hub to a government and regional center.

Mark Kelley has been a freelance photographer for over 20 years. His photos have appeared on the covers of more than 100 publications including Alaska and national magazines, books, brochures, calendars and annual reports.

Mark's images illustrate six books. His other titles include Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska; Juneau Portrait; Southeast Alaska, a Photo Memory; Alaska's Ocean Highways; and Heartbeat, World Eskimo Indian Olympics.

Mark also produces two wall calendars of his photos of Juneau and of Southeast Alaska and a line of photo note cards.

Mark was born and raised in Buffalo, NY. He moved to Alaska in 1974 to attend the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Mark graduated in 1978 with a degree in journalism and northern studies. He worked as the Juneau Empire's photographer for 14 years until he left in 1993 to freelance full time. Mark also did graduate work in photojournalism at Ohio University in Athens.

Mark lives in Juneau with his wife and two sons. He and his family are avid outdoorspeople, especially enjoying soccer, skiing, sportfishing and camping.
