Compiled in this book, are the funniest and most compelling political cartoons of The Baltimore Sun's Kevin Kallaugher, popularly known as "KAL." The compilation of his work from 1996 to 2000 is presented in the chapters "national affairs," "oval office affairs," " political affairs," " foreign affairs" and "local affairs."
KAL's cartoons pillory hypocrisy and attack our failures- from indifference to gun violence, to the worst moments of the Clinton-Lewinsky fallout, to negative campaigning. At the same time, they provide a social history that we can both laugh at and draw insight from.
After graduating from Harvard (class of '77), Kallaugher went off to England to play basketball for the Brighton, Basketball Club. Thankfully -- for the newspaper world -- the basketball team went bankrupt and Kallaugher found himself overseas without a job. He began drawing caricatures of tourists and was soon recruited by The Economist of London to serve as their resident cartoonist -- the first ever in their 145-year-history. In 1988, Kallaugher returned to the U.S. and added the Baltimore Sun to his cartooning workload. Kallaugher's cartoons are also syndicated in La Monde, Der Spiegel, Time, Newsweek and more then 100 other publications worldwide. In addition to KAL Draws the Line, Kallaugher has collected his works in KAL Draws a Crowd, KALtoons and Drawn from the Economist
Kevin Kallaugher's biting wit and laugh-out-loud illustrated commentaries boil down an issue to its core revealing absurdities, truths and raw emotions. His expertise has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades, including the 1999 Thomas Nast Award from the Overseas Press Club of America. The World Encyclopedia of Cartoons recently wrote, "Kallaugher stands among the premier caricaturists of the 20th century."
