Par un processus d'engagement intime et souvent prolong�, les portraits et les images de Soth de l'environnement de son sujet impliquent une enqu�te sur la mesure dans laquelle une ressemblance photographique peut repr�senter plus que la surface ext�rieure d'un individu, et peut-�tre m�me sonder les profondeurs de quelque chose d'inconnaissable � la fois la gardienne et le photographe. �Apr�s la publication de mon dernier livre sur la vie sociale en Am�rique, Songbook, et une r�trospective de mes quatre projets am�ricains � grande �chelle, Gathered Leaves, j'ai travers� une longue p�riode de repenser mon processus cr�atif. Pendant plus d'un an, j'ai arr�t� de voyager et de photographier des gens. J'ai � peine pris des photos. Quand je suis revenu � la photographie, j'ai voulu d�pouiller le m�dium jusqu'� ses �l�ments primaires. Plut�t que d'essayer de faire une sorte de r�cit �pique sur l'Am�rique, je voulais simplement passer du temps � regarder d'autres personnes et, esp�rons-le, bri�vement entrevoir leur vie int�rieure. Afin d'essayer d'acc�der � ces vies, j'ai fait toutes les photographies dans les espaces int�rieurs. Bien que ces pi�ces existent souvent dans des endroits �loign�s, c'est seulement pour souligner que ces images ne concernent aucun endroit en particulier. Russian Hill Bookstore, established in 1974, is one of the last family-owned used and new bookstores in San Francisco. We began as Sunset Bookstore in 1974, a small used bookshop servicing the Sunset District west of 19th Avenue, and have been in continual operation for the past 50 years. Over the years Sunset Bookstore has since closed and merged with Russian Hill Bookstore, which has grown to also become the best note card shop in the city, and a favorite place for toys and games for children of all ages.
