About this Item

Two pages, written on a folded sheet of 5 inch x 8 inch note paper. The 3/4 inch upper and side margins have been folded over and now show cracking to the paper, the upper right-hand corners of the pages have broken off, but are still present, the edges show age-related tanning and some wear, with remains of some brown paste to the back of the second page. This item requires the attention of a professional paper conservator. Dana thanks Whitmore for the loan of a book [Sewell's Diary?], which he is returning, and takes note of Elias Daney [mentioned in Sewall's Diary]. Jan 18. 1878 Dear Sir I am greatly obliged to you for the vol. of [-] which I return herewith, with my thanks. As Elias Daney (Vol II p 207) was a judge in France as late as 1669, & his only child was a daughter who left France 1685, he cannot be connected with Richard Dana who came to Boston in 1640 & I get nothing here[?] except a MS. of my grfather, that his gr. gr. father Richard Dana, was from the continent of Europe Yours truly R.
