G. K. GILBERT (1843-1918). Grove Karl Gilbert was one of the great and prolific geologists involved in the western surveys of the 1870s and 80s. He spent five years with the Powell Surveys, 1874-1879 and is considered one of the giants of geomorphology. Gilbert was instrumental in surveys of Utahs Henry Mountains, Great Salt Lake, and studying the Meteor Crater National Landmark in Arizona in relation to lunar craters.ALS. 1pg. May 23, 1891. Washington D.C. An autograph letter signed Gilbert to geologist N. S. Shaler on United States Geological Survey letterhead: My dear Shaler Some funds for geologic work have unexpectedly become available. Some time ago you asked for a supplementary allotment which was not granted in full. If you still see a way to put a few hundred dollars more to good use this fiscal year, please write me once Yours Gilbert. In 1891, Shaler may have needed geological funds to support his fieldwork and mapping of the Atlantic Coastal Plain under the USGS. Gilbert was a senior USGS geologist who had the position of granting him these funds. The letter is in excellent condition.
