Letter Reporting Progress to Colonel, Dalton, GA May 13, 1865

This letter was written after Appomattox, so it seems that Captain Carling was trying to take care of men and materials still in Georgia and that there might have been some theft involved. When he says "Please arrange so that when my affairs are fixed here I can return and put an end to the Horse Business," he may be referring to leaving the Army and going home! The letter was written on official stationery with an embossed Capitol and Congress at the top left, in near fine condition. The paper is 15 by 11", folded in fourths, then in thirds to mail. It was written to Col. Andrew Jackson Mackay, Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the Cumberland under General George Thomas. Included is the outer page serving as envelope, with has in red the notation, "Recd Office CQM AC May 15/65. Transcript also included.; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 2 pages; Signed by Author.
