About this Item

Description:

EDWARD ENTWISTLE (1815-1909). Entwistle was the first-ever driver of a passenger train when he drove the Liverpool and Manchester Railway on September 15, 1830.ALS. 2 pg. 4 x 6. October 22, 1905. Des Moines, Iowa. An autograph letter signed Mr Edward Entwistle to Paul W. Miller (Entwistles creative spelling is untouched in this transcription): Dear Sir, your note receivedI was prentice two duke of Bridge water for two years in September thirty one and George Stevenson came and for a man to seen is engine and he sent me i was only a boy i run for him two years and quit for i got nervous wen they took me to the rocket they put me out the duke of Bridgewater steam boats. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway was the first railway to only use locomotives driven by steam power, with no horse-drawn power utilized. Apprenticed as an engineer at the age of eleven. Entwistle worked for the Bridgewater Trust, named after Francis Egerton, the Third Duke of Bridgewater. They owned a nearby and still active canal, the Bridgwater Canal, and oversaw the construction of the Rocket locomotive. This locomotive was the brainchild of George Stephenson (1781-1848), who is called the Father of Railways for pioneering the standard gauge used on railways around the world, for designing the first steam locomotive, and and for building the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. At sixteen, Entwistle became his assistant and piloted the Rocket twice a day for two years. He eventually became a marine engineer and emigrated to the United States, where he dies in 1909 in Des Moines, Iowa. His longevity led to newspaper celebrations of his life and his pioneering accomplishment from the Washington Post to the Otago Witness in New Zealand. Paul W. Miller (1889-1941) appears to have been a teenager in Washington Court House, Fayette County, Ohio interested in this mans accomplishment. The letter is in fine condition. Seller Inventory # 6210
