Item description from seller

99 Holywell Street is owned by Merton College, Oxford, where both J R R Tolkien lived, and then Christopher Tolkien immediately after. Between the two, they occupied 99 Holywell, a Grade II listed building, from 1950-1967. The Tolkien family were in residence for the whole period of the first edition of Lord of the Rings. Early signatures by Christopher Tolkien are scarce, and this is a particularly good example. The letter comes with the original receipt from when it was sold 23 years ago, to a gentleman in the United States. The dimensions of the letter are 170mm (w) x 202mm (h).
