1st printing of the first Canadian hardcover illustrated edition SIGNED by Canadian author Yann Martel on the title page and DATED in the MONTH of PUBLICATION, 22 November 2007. The on-sale date for the book was ten days earlier on 13 November. Navy blue cloth with gold titles and pumpkin endpapers. This copy is square and tight with sharp corners, and the jacket is bright and price intact. Minor, unobtrusive wear to the top edge of the front and back panels. The underside of the heel of the book's spine shows wear that has resulted in some color loss. A lovely coffee-table edition of the Canadian author's Man Booker Prizewinner, illustrated with 40 color paintings by a Croatian artist selected from among 1600 submissions in an open, worldwide competition. According to the author, one of the things that distinguished Torjanac was his decision to paint the scenes from Pi's perspective, without ever showing Pi. That approach complements the novel because it's a first person narrative. Martel does not describe Pi's physical appearance in the novel, because, he says, there was no reason to do so.
