Complete with 2 photogravure frontis-pieces, with the tissue guards intact, along with an additional 37 illustrations throughout, as called for, with a total of 39 illustrations. Inscribed by the Author on the front free endpaper "To Elizabeth Ann Eckels. Some day maybe you will visit the haunts of John Burroughs, & get nearer to the man. I hope these books will help toward that end. Clara Barrus". In vol. II "Cordially yours, Clara Barrus". There is also a gift inscription from Clyde Fisher, a friend on Burroughs, and a curator at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC, and later head of the Hayden Planetarium "To my good friend and associate, Elizabeth Ann Eckels, hoping she will enjoy the book, as I am sure she would have enjoyed the man. Clyde Fisher, American Museum of Natural History, New York City, 1928". The author, Clara Barrus met John Burroughs and his wife in 1901, and became Burroughs friend, secretary, nearly constant traveling companion, and moved in with him after his wifes death. When Burroughs died, she was his literary executor. Covers are very mildly soiled, with lightly bumped corners, interior pages slightly age toned.
