Original pen-and-ink drawing, 12 x 9 3/4 inches, signed by the illustrator in the lower left corner, "H. Thomson 07," with various shades of blue, brown, yellow, and flesh-tone wash coloring. Pictured as a full-color plate (as in this drawing, but not as vibrant) opposite page 238 in "Silas Marner" by George Elliot (London: Macmillan, 1907; "With illustrations by Hugh Thomson"). "His drawings showed a delightful skill in landscape work . all of [his illustrated books] he showed a fine appreciation of thee author's point of view, together with much character and imagination of his own . being usually called upon for pictures of the dainty graces and foibles of seventeenth and eighteenth century and early Victorian society . he destroyed much of his work as soon as drawn" (DNB).
