"Third Printing, August 1974" stated, Inscribed to a former owner and Signed in full title page, light toning/dusting to edges of text block with a small drip spot to top edge - 1/4" line of fading to bottom edge of cloth covering - two very small spots of black mark to lower left of rear board - gift inscription to front free end paper, same person inscribed to by Author - there are inked underlining or one to three word notations on 27 pages of the text, dj now enclosed in mylar wrap shows edge wear, light soiling, a little scuffing to folds and fading to spine - 1/2" wide x 5/16" deep and 1/4" wide x 1/4" deep triangle pieces missing along top edge folds to panels and spine with small chipping/scuffing along bottom edge of spine - chip to top of fold rear panel to flap - 1/8" and 1/4" tears along top edge of rear flap - chip each to top/bottom of fold front panel to flap - original price intact. About the Author: Lewis Thomas was a physician, poet, etymologist, essayist, administrator, educator, policy advisor, and researcher. A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Medical School, he was the dean of Yale Medical School and New York University School of Medicine, and the president of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Institute. He wrote regularly in the New England Journal of Medicine, and his essays were published in several collections, including The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher, which won two National Book Awards and a Christopher Award, and The Medusa and the Snail, which won the National Book Award in Science. He died in 1993.
