About this Item
Illustrations by John Tenniell. Small 4to. Blue cloth with silver lettering and silver/blue pictorial stamping, slipcase. xiv, 199pp. Illustrations. Fine/near fine. Tight and handsome copy of the 1872 classic by the author best known for the 1865 "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." This pristine modern edition bears a half dozen appropriate autograph additions. Of the many film and television adaptations of this was an NBC musical t.v. special in 1966, and this copy bears signatures of six cast members tipped onto facing inner flyleaves, five of them (all but Durante) on fine matching heavy stock 5" X 3" cards. Left side, top to bottom: JIMMY DURANTE (1893-1980), who plays Humpty Dumpty, boldly signs an irregular quadrilateral 4" X 3" slip in blue ballpoint, to which he also pens "Donald -- / Sorry I dont / know a little verse (very good, but lightly age toned and with several small tape stains at margins); RICARDO MONTALBAN (1920-2009), who plays White King, signs in black fineline and dates it 21 October 1972 at upper right; and NANETTE FABRAY (1920-2018), who plays White Queen, signs in blue ballpoint, adding "Happiness!" below and dating it 7 April 1973 at upper right. Right side, top to bottom: IRIS ADRIAN (1912-94), who plays Tiger Lilly, signs in black fineline, dating it 27 November 1984 at upper right; DICK SMOTHERS (born 1938), who plays Tweededee, signs in black fineline and dates it 4 October 1978 at upper right; and TOM SMOTHERS (born 1937), who plays Tweedledum, signs in full ("Thomas B. Smothers") in blue ballpoint and dates it 30 September 1978 at upper right. All original transmittal envelopes sans Durante are laid in, as is the relevant "Sandglass" issue. Quite a unique and interesting copy. Seller Inventory # 47731
