ALS. 2pg. 8 x 10. February 17, 1857. Washington. An autograph letter signed Miles Taylor addressed to President Franklin Pierce in the last days of his Presidency: I am informed that Charles S. Lester of New York is a candidate for the appointment of District Attorney for the Territory of Minnesota, and as I have known Mr. Lester for some length of time, & have formed a high opinion of his capacity to a member of the legal profession & of his qualities as a man, I take the liberty to recommend him to you most respectfully, for that appointment. If the office in question should beI am presumed that he will fulfill the duties of that place withto himself & with advantage to the public. This was written six months before Minnesota was granted statehood. The letter has soiling and a few piece of old tape on the verso that touches no words; the condition is very good.
