Farm line map of the area in East Harlem between 111th and 122nd Streets, from Fourth (now Madison) Avenue east to First Avenue. Full original color by lot. Modern linen backing, very minor cracking at edges. This is one of the large, and now very scarce, series of maps published separately by Holmes, the city surveyor, which showed 17th and 18th century farm lines superimposed over the contemporary grid system. Very bright and colorful, these maps are among the most detailed 19th century maps for individual Manhattan neighborhoods. This map demonstrates a substantial presence of the Roosevelt family, with the land at the bottom right being identified as the Estate of James Roosevelt, and an obsolete street named Roosevelt Lane running diagonally northward from Second Avenue from 112th St. to 116th Street. Text at right details transfers of property in this area in the 18th and 19th centuries. There is an interesting note at the bottom, signed with Holmes's initials: "Lawyers who may be benefitted by this map, may thank Joseph O. Brown, Esq., 76 Nassau Street, for were it not for his aid which he most generosly gave to me, (and for which I thank him), this Map would not now be in existence.". Seller Inventory # m01626
