Comprehensive and scarce text by the secretary of the Grand Lodge of Virginia, John Dove (1792-1876). Dove was a doctor and helped found the Medical Society of Virginia in 1820. As a masonic leader, he was worshipful master of Randolph Lodge No. 19 before becoming Grand Secretary for 41 years starting in 1835. He was also Grand Recorder of the Virginia Grand Commandery of the Knights Templar. This textbook by Dove, first published in 1847 and going through several editions, standardized Masonic rituals and was Nationally circulated. This copy with an interesting provenance, being inscribed to Samuel M. Todd of New Orleans.Todd (1815-1905) served as Grand Master of Masons in Louisiana in 1859, 1868, and 1870-1872. He was also grand commander of the Knights Templar of Louisiana in 1866-67. 8vo, [v], xxi, 404pp. Vignette engravings throughout. Presentation copy, inscribed by Dove twice, on the ffep and blank preceding chapter 1, to Samuel M. Todd and dated in 1861. Publisher's black cloth elaborately stamped in blind, with gilt titling on the spine. Spine faded, few scuffs to boards. Endpapers toned, single signature in the middle a bit proud else clean internally and very good.
