Trotz �chtung des Komponisten durch die Nationalsozialisten und Auff�hrungsverboten in Deutschland erschienen die Werke des Komponisten zun�chst noch bei Schott's S�hnen in Mainz, bevor Hindemith ins Schweizer Exil ging. Die Oper "Mathis der Maler", zu der Hindemith auch das Libretto verfasste, ist vom Isenheimer Altar inspiriert und wurde 1938 in Z�rich uraufgef�hrt; die Vor- und Zwischenspiele entstanden bereits 1934 als gleichnamige Symphonie.
