53 pp, b/w and colour plates. Gently creased corners, light edgewear and outer edge curl to front wrap. Signed by author on title page. Alberta-born Bates (1906-1980) moved to England in 1931. Artist. He joined British Army in 194, was sent to help defend France and was captured by German army. POW until end of war. After war became an architect. his most notable work was St. Mary's Cathedral, Calgary.
