Singer was a Holocaust survivor and a devoted educator who dedicated her life to teaching others about tolerance, human rights, and her experiences during World War II. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1930, she and her family survived the Nazi occupation by hiding in convents and other places with the help of the Belgian resistance. Following an encounter with a flyer that denied the Holocaust, Singer was motivated to share her story and educate others. She developed a Holocaust education curriculum for teachers and volunteered for many years at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. In 2012, the Flora M. Singer Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland, was named in her honor, the first public school in the U.S. named for a Holocaust survivor.
