Fine hardcover book published 1927, in very scarce dust jacket, lengthy inscription and SIGNED by the author, PLUS a pristine photo of the author signed by him and dated March 30, 1928 is laid in. An association copy of the best kind. Clean dark blue cloth-covered boards with gold lettering on cover and spine. No bumping, fading or wear. Binding is tight and square, hinges are sound - no cracking. Inscribed and signed on front free endpaper as follows: "To Florence J. Bellamy with the best wishes and sincere regards of the author, who will ever remember with pleasure the way in which she helped further the work described in the concluding part of this book. - Clifford Whittingham Beers, Founder and Secretary of the National Committee for Mental Hygiene, March 30, 1928." All pages and edges are clean and bright - no marks, no foxing. At rear of book is tipped in a beautiful clean 16-page pamphlet "Privately Printed" in New York, dated 1926 entitled "A Mind That Found Itself and Its Author". Laid in at the front is a clean unworn photo of the author dated March 30, 1928 and signed by the author. 411 pages. Dust jacket is clean, not price clipped (2.00 on front inside flap), age-toning to spine, small chips at upper edge of spine, nearly separated at front spine fold but complete and now enclosed in new archival quality removable mylar cover. The founder of the mental hygiene movement, Clifford Whittingham Beers (18761943) launched one of the earliest client-advocate health reform movements in the United States. A former patient who was institutionalized for three years, Beers led national and international efforts to improve institutional care, challenge the stigma of mental illness, and promote mental health.
