Burt Smith, Ph.D.

Dr. Smith holds an AB degree in Mathematics from San Diego State College, a MS degree in biology from Western Kentucky University, and a Ph.D. in Agronomy, Range Management, and Systems Ecology from the University of Florida. He worked five years in the missile industry for General Dynamics Astronautics and Thiokol Chemical Company as a Missile Engineer. He has owned and operated a diversified ranch/dairy in Northwestern Utah, seven years in Central Nevada running cattle on the, then, open range, and three years in Central Kentucky on a diversified farm. He has worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a researcher and the last 20 years has been spent at the University of Hawaii as their Extension Specialist in pasture and livestock management. Dr. Smith has traveled widely thoughout the United States, Canada and Mexico as well as the Pacific basin. He has authored numerous articles and manuals on intensive grazing and animal handling. the first book published, 1986, on the subject since the translation of Andre Voisn's work in 1954. His work in animal handling lead to the release of a video in 1993 "Basic Herding." He has been the featured speaker at numerous conferences and workshops throughout north America the most recent being the Winter Conference of the American Bison Association in January of this year.
