About this Item
Historically significant signed copy of Sally McClain?s Navajo Weapon: The Navajo Code Talkers, signed in ink on the title page by five identified WWII Navajo Code Talkers: Bill Toledo, Albert Smith, Alfred K. Newman Sr., Robert Walley Sr., and Jack Jones.
Although this appears to be a later printing, believed to be the 13th printing, the collectible importance of this copy rests not in the printing statement but in its direct association with five Navajo Code Talkers whose service formed part of one of the most important military communications achievements of World War II.
The Navajo Code Talkers transmitted battlefield communications in the Pacific Theater using a code based on the Navajo language. The National Archives records that Japan?s chief of intelligence later acknowledged that the Navajo code was one they were never able to break. The Code Talkers? work remained classified until 1968, and national recognition followed decades later, with Congressional Gold Medals awarded to the original twenty-nine Code Talkers and Congressional Silver Medals awarded to later qualified Code Talkers.
