4to. 25cm, 3 volumes bound in two, [xxvi],609 & [vi],454,[1] & [vi],314pp., engraved frontis, several illustrated headers, chapter foot device decorations, drop caps, 4 folding maps, foot & marginal notes, in contemporary full calf, real raised bands, double leather labels, full gilt decorations and borders in the panels, wear and some chipping on the edges, front corners bump & worn, board surface wear on the boards, general good to very good sound condition (ds1). ~ This issue not in worldCAt. ~ An early French translation of the New Testament, based on the Clementine Vulgate and furnished with notes and annotations by French Biblical scholar, Denis Amelotte (1609 1678). First published in 1666 70 and again in 1681, in opposition to the Jansenist Port Royal version. Amelotte states that the work was undertaken with the request of the Archbishop of Toulouse and the Bishop of Montauban themselves under the direction of the General Assembly of the Clergy of France for 1655. With the printer's 1687 dedication to the Archbishop of Paris. An interesting Canadian association copy signed several times and dated 1858 by Robert Currie Geggie, a prominent Quebec educationalist.
