About this Item

11 original ink sketches done for Edmund Clerihew's "Biography For Beginners" published by Werner Laurie in 1905. These rough state (pre-publication) drawings in ink have slight variations to the finished work. 2 have his monogram GKC within the images, 3 have rhymes for the illustrations in the writers own hand, though crossed through (perhaps by the printers), but the wording can be read as Chesterton wrote them. All drawings are tipped onto art cart along top edge and in old off-white mounts the mounts are handled and bumped, several are numbered in blue crayon in top corners, a few small marks here and there, on the reverse are the names of the caricatured/cartoon people depicted, these are; Walter Besant, Clive of India, Edvard Grieg, Marconi, Edward the Confessor, John Stuart Mill, Don Miguel de Cervantes, David Ricardo (economist), Karl Marx. (The verse with this is funny; "Karl Marx had a taste in shark's, it is said they seriously missed him while he was attacking the social system". + Tiziano Vecelli, Sir Thomas à Mallory. All on art paper and slightly varied sizes 10-11 x 7-8 inches. Most likely drawn in 1904 for publication of the book in 1905. An early collection of drawings by this polymath and creater of the crime detective "Father Brown". (sold as one archive 11 drawings).
