Item description from seller

- An original 5-3/4 inch high by 3-1/2 inch wide black & white photograph of Edna Porter, attired in a sleeveless floral dress, playing the accordion. Portrayed full-length in front of an ivy covered bannister or fence. The photograph is mounted on 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide plain buff mat board. Inscribed & signed in ink by Edna Porter to the American cartoonist Art Young on the mat under the image. Typed on the verso of the mat is a poem by Edna Porter entitled "Lure of the Sea", dated 1927. This 4-stanza poem is annotated in type by the poet as "From 'Around and Back' World Tour Poems To - Helen Keller". The photograph is rubbed, soiled and slightly creased. The mat is soiled with faint glue stains along the right edge of the photo and with a pinhole centered at the top of the mat. Good. A close friend of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan, the poet, activist and actress Edna Porter edited the book "Double Blossoms: Helen Keller Anthology". The work was an anthology of short works about Helen Keller written by renowned writers. Several of the Harlem Renaissance poets contributed to the book. Most famous for his socialist political cartoons, the American cartoonist and author Arthur Henry "Art" Young (1866-1943) contributed extensively to the magazine "The Masses" between 1911 and 1917. Young was also close to Helen Keller, who was a socialist and shared his politics. We have been unable to locate any evidence that Edna Porter's poem "Lure of the Sea" was ever published. "The Sea, The Sea is calling me! / The Sea, The Sea comes after me / To sing a song and laugh with me / I know the Sea The Sea knows me.".
