About this Item

Description:

Octavo. 160 pages. Frontispiece illustration and one illustrated plate in text by Charles L. Bull. Gray paper covered boards with black lettered title on the front cover. Green cloth spine with title at the head. Front and rear hinges have thin cracks. Edge wear to the boards. Light shelf wear to the cloth spine. A 3" closed tear bottom of page 67. Previous owner's name written at top of the blank recto of the frontispiece illustration. Signed by Archibald Rutledge bottom of the same page. A couple of light finger smudges also on the page. Contents are a series of articles for various publications including Outing Magazine, The Youth's Companion, The American Boy's Magazine, and The Black Cat. 5 of these stories did not make it into the 1921 edition. A good copy. Scarce. 8 copies in OCLC. OCLC Entry 19760130; OCLC Accession Number 1954885. It is unclear when this book was actually published. There are no printing dates associated with this book. Auction records not found for editions prior to 1921. 1913 has been stated as the first edition because some of the inscribed copies have the date of 1913 written inside. This private publication was supposedly limited to 500 copies but some believe only 100-200 copies were printed for family and friends. Wikipedia page states Old Plantation Days was printed in 1907. A search of OCLC (Worldcat) claims the book was actually published in 1905. From OCLC: "According to a 1972 exchange of letters between the author and Mrs. Paul Smith, of the Old Book Corner, Chapel Hill, N.C., this edition of "Old plantation days" was published in 1905 in an edition of 500 copies. The letters were laid in the copy of the book acquired by the University of Virginia". Archibald Rutledge (1883-1973) was 88 or 89 years old when the correspondence between Mrs. Paul Smith from Chapel Hill occurred. Seller Inventory # 16908
