A brief signed autograph letter from Charles Dickens, dated 10th November 1859, to Thomas Spalding, sending his "Two proxies in favor of Mr Doogood." One page, 8vo, on headed stationary of Tavistock House, mounted. The letter relates to Dickens's vote, in an unnamed philanthropic society, in favor of the journalist Henry John Doogood who had been blinded and paralyzed in a railway accident in 1854. Dickens himself was involved in a serious railway accident in 1865 when the Folkestone to London train came off the track near Staplehurst. Dickens's conduct on that occasion, providing assistance to the injured, was much admired at the time and the directors of the railway company sent him a piece of plate in gratitude. PRESENTED TOGETHER WITH: Letters. Edited by [Mamie Dickens and Georgina Hogarth]. x + 764 pages + [4pp of advertisements]. Small 8vo, original gilt-stamped green cloth. London: Macmillan and Co. 1893. Third edition, edited by Dickens's sister-in-law and his eldest daughter. A very good copy. The book and letter are preserved together in a specially made green cloth-covered 4to fall-down-back box with leather labels. …
