[?ód?], 1985. Quartos (31 × 21.5 cm). Original side-stapled stiff card wrappers; type-written list of contributors affixed to front boards; [16] and [29] leaves of typescript, photographs, reproductions, original artworks and objects pasted onto the leaves or sewn into binding. One of the collages coming unglued, one leaf torn. Second issue lacking insert to rear wrapper. Overall about very good. Complete run of this composite art publication produced by artists associated with the Polish Kultura Zrzuty with neo-Dadaist and neo-Expressionist leanings. Jointly edited by W?odzimierz Adamiak, Zbigniew Libera, and Zbyszko Trzeciakowski, these hand-made issues were assembled from contributions on single leaves in various media, prepared by the individual artists. The artworks appear alongside manifestos and other texts that were handwritten or photocopied, typed or mimeographed. The elaborate publication was inspired by Tango, which was a kind of repository of Kultura Zrzuty, with Zbigniew Libera and W?odzimierz Adamiak also contributing numerous individual pages to Tango in the same period. These volumes include original works signed by Zbigniew Libera, Anna Goebel, Marek Bocian, Aleksandra Trzeciakowska, and Zbyszko Trzeciakowski, "Kultura Zrzuty" (usually translated as Pitch-In Culture) began as a loose collaboration of artists at the Strych, an attic space in a ?ód? tenement house during the Polish Martial Law (1981-1983). Anarchic and self-regulated, the Kultura Zrzuty community positioned itself against art sanctioned by the Communist state, as well as the art of the political opposition affiliated with the Church. Proposing a "third way," it also rebelled against the self-seriousness of neo-avant-garde unofficial art. The name Kultura Zrzuty derives from the expression "zrobi? zrzutk?" ("to pass the hat around") and refers to the fact that the group was completely self-funded and without state resources. Other epithets that have been applied to Kultura Zrzuty artists include Punk and Neo-Dada. A "protest against life being dominated by politics" was, according to Piotr Rypson, at the heart of this new cultural phenomenon, and an "attempt to abandon the area of ideological, national or religious strife, moving to spheres of freedom of art and expression: an attempt to leave the field chosen by the enemy" (Rypson 2000, pp. 124-125). A search for alternative ways of distributing art during Martial Law was the driving force behind the creation of Tango; the assembled issues were casually passed around in the arts community. Each issue was an exhibition, a catalog, and an archive in one. A splintering within the Kultura Zrzuty community led to the creation of new group publications such as the present volumes, as well SDS, Halo Haloo, and Hali Gali. Similar to Tango, these two issues were produced in a print run of 100, with each volume being a unique assemblage of multiples.…
