A presentation copy, inscribed by Manville on the front fly leaf. True to its title, this work on orange cultivation provides direct and straightforward (though quite fetchingly printed) advice on the planting and raising of oranges and other citrus fruits. In addition to the details of cultivation, there are chapters on common diseases, insect predators, and even on methods for packing and shipping your crop. The appendix contains a catalogue of orange varieties present in Florida along with their appearance, taste, and quality, and assesses the qualities of citrus from California, Europe, and Asia. For example, there are entries for the Satsuma orange and the Eureka lemon, described as "recently introduced from California; of medium size, with sweet rind and strong acid. Tree thornless; strong grower; early and prolific bearer." The author, who presents this copy with his compliments to a resident of Wilmington, Delaware, was proprietor of the Manville Nursery Company in Lake George, a founding officer and driving force behind the Florida Horticultural Society, and was inducted into the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame in 1968. OCLC records this scarce little book at fourteen institutions, six of them located in Florida and two outside of the United States. SERVIES 7462. OCLC 1728694, 562017091. Original limp burgundy cloth, lettered in gilt. Spine slightly sunned, light shelf wear. Internally clean. Presentation inscription on front free endpaper. Near fine.
