(Orlowski, Hans)illus. DER PSALTER. The Book of Psalms in the translation of Martin Luther. Kathe Vogt Verlag, Berlin, 1961. 4to., linen, DJ, 77 pages, 150 psalms, 29 original woodcut illustrations by Orlowski. The total edition was 2000 copies, of which 200 were leatherbound, 300 were bound in half-parchment, and 1500 were bound in linen. The first 500 were signed. Although this is one of the linen copies, it is signed on the justification page; in lieu of a printed number, it is inscribed "HO xi/xv," clearly by Orlowski,indicating, we believe, that it was one of 15 copies given to Orlowski his own use. Fine, DJ has two very small nicks, and its spine is darkened. Hans Orlowski, 1994-1967, was a German artist, who started as a follower of the Secessionists and worked in an expressionist manner until the mid-1920s, when he developed a style of his own, unrelated to any movement. He was an influetial teacher, had many exhibitions, and, working in woodcut, illustrated several books and livres d'artiste.
