Limited Edition of One hundred fifty copies (see second photograph for more information). Signed by the illustrator on the limitation page. You can see the covers in the photos ( note that the two thin scratches in the same place on the front and rear are actually on the surface of the scanner, not on the covers--you can confirm that by looking at the third photo of the spine). I don't believe the book was published with a dust jacket. If a seller is advertising one you should ask for a picture. The covers are very clean. There's a slight toning/lightening of the black off the top edge of the rear cover. The wraparound label on the front and spine is in excellent condition. The cover edges and corners of the book are in excellent condition as well, no rubbing. The page edges are very clean. They are deckled or rough-cut at on all three sides. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book is in exceptional condition. It looks unused. The inside covers and end papers form a beautiful illustration. All are in excellent condition, perfectly clean. The same can be said for all of the pages, very bright, perfectly clean. I'm not seeing any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And the illustrator's signature is the only writing to be found anywhere. There are laid- in tissue guards between all the pages that have an illustration. They are all in very good condition. A very nice-looking, well-preserved book offered at the least expensive price of the few for sale on the Internet. 'The Pit and the Pendulum is a short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe and first published in 1842 in the literary annual The Gift: A Christmas and New Year's Present for 1843. The story is about the torments endured by a prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition, though Poe skews historical facts. The narrator of the story describes his experience of being tortured. The story is especially effective at inspiring fear in the reader because of its heavy focus on the senses, such as sound, emphasizing its reality, unlike many of Poe's stories which are aided by the supernatural. The traditional elements established in popular horror tales at the time are followed, but critical reception has been mixed. The tale has been adapted to film several times.'.
