Indeed, the free endpaper of this volume is inscribed: "Nowell & Mason, Nov. 19, 1823, Portland." Nowell & Mason are listed in the Directory as grocers at no. 2, south side Long Wharf. The final 20 pages of the volume are devoted to advertisements of various Portland businesses. The volume is enhanced by the label of legendary Portland antiquarian bookseller F.M. O'Brien on the front pastedown. A scarce and important Portland Imprint. Shaw & Shoemaker, American Imprints: 12956. Spear, Bibliography of American Directories through 1860: p. 298.
